THE NIGHT BLOOMS
FEATURE FILM
Driven by a mother's love and a desire to protect her children from a dangerous world, a woman resorts to unsettling measures by keeping them permanently asleep, whilst hiding an even more disturbing secret.

SYNOPSIS
It’s been 4 years since John went missing, and his wife Marion is the only one who knows what happened to him.
Held in a psychiatric hospital, she recounts her traumatic marriage with John in their large family house. She then remarkably explains why, after his disappearance, she kept their children permanently asleep their entire lives.
Embittered and delusional, she believed she was keeping the children safe from the outside world by forcing a ‘life in dreams’; reading them stories as they slept and allowing them awake only one hour a day.
We also discover Marion’s relationship with John’s dejected brother Peter and his wife Sarah, as they both attempt to put the pieces together and find out what happened to John.
Across plot twists and curveballs throughout the story, we finally learn of an even more disturbing secret Marion has been keeping all along; John never left the house.
Short Film
‘The Night Blooms’ started as a short film; this being the impetus for ARK Pictures to tell a larger story.
After creating this short we quickly realised there is so much more to explore; the whys, the hows, what happens to the mother character, the children. It’s such a unique and interesting scenario that we ourselves want to know more!
Creating a feature film allows us to delve deeper into this world, explain the background of these characters and introduce new dynamics to the story.

-
This is a story that is gentle and comforting, whilst also horrifying. THE NIGHT BLOOMS is a look at human behaviour, past trauma and inadvertent abuse. It offers questions about people pushed to their limits and what they’d do to protect the ones they love the most. With unsettling editing, a haunting score and a non-chronological timeline, the audience will get a sense of unease and experience the disturbing tension from start to finish.
-
THE NIGHT BLOOMS is targeted at fans of horror films and slow-burn psychological thrillers that build to a terrifying finale.
Films with fully developed characters, considered cinematography and an intriguing screenplay attract a loyal fanbase. We believe there’s a huge audience out there who are thirsty for new storys like this.
-
Psychological thriller horror films that have inspired THE NIGHT BLOOMS include ‘Saint Maud’, ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, ‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’ and ‘The House that Jack Built’.
Films that include similar settings and characters, such as a large house, an unreliable narrator and unhinged characters.
